Does my child have to participate in any religious celebrations at Buckley?

Not if you don't want him or her to. Your child, however, is likely to be exposed to and learn about other people's faiths. Buckley believes that every child's experience must be validated and celebrated freely and openly, including his or her religious values.

Silly String at the Fall Fair

Dear Dr. Juhel,

I have a few thoughts about Silly String that I’d like to share with you:

1. Silly String is bad for the environment.

2. I’ve heard complaints that the older kids were spraying at adults and adults don’t like getting sprayed.

3. I’ve also been hearing some complaints that the kids are going near the rides and the people that control the rides think that they are going to spray the rides.

4. I don’t think the Silly String is good for the grass or the animals that you brought to the Fall Fair.

5. I know some of my friends will disagree but sometimes you have to do the right thing and make unpopular decisions.

What are SMARTboards and when are they used?

SMARTboards are interactive whiteboards that function like oversize touchscreens. They can be used just like whiteboards, but all the notes taken can be saved to a computer or a flash drive.
Teachers can use them to demonstrate any software applications, navigate websites, or show video clips. In addition, the SMARTboard software gives the teachers access to almost 5,000 tools such as maps and diagrams for science. They are in all classrooms in grades 1-8. SMARTboards are used as often as the teachers want to. In many classes they have already replaced whiteboards. Teachers have all been trained in SMARTboard 101, 102, and 103. The possibilities offered by SMARTboards seem endless.

Why do we have A and B teams at Buckley?

In the fall and winter Buckley separates the athletic teams into A and B teams. The A team is for more experienced players. The B team is for players who need to improve their skills before they can safely play at the A level. Buckley is the only school using this system and therefore our teams are smaller. The toss-up is between having a more subs or getting more play time. Buckley believes that actually getting to play is critical. We do recognize, however, that some teams do not have enough subs and are considering for 2008-2009 adding a team of floaters who would play on both A and B teams and provide more subs.

Can I bring to Buckley goods that I purchased from a bakery?

Most likely not, since we are not aware of any bakery that guarantees that its premises are nut-free and that all proper measures to avoid cross-contamination are in place.

Can I bring home-made goods to Buckley?

Yes, as long as all the ingredients are listed and as long as you took the necessary measures to avoid risks of cross-contamination.
